  •  In general, I don't think the consultant class (9+ / 0-)

really understands their base and it's not just a racial thing. I'm a middle-aged white male and I don't think they reflect my values at all and have not done so for a long time.

You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.

    •  Subconsciously, it's definitely racial (5+ / 0-)

Racial thinking and behavior is ingrained into the national consciousness. As Sonya Sotomayor wisely said in her confirmation hearings, everyone has biases so it's incumbent upon everyone to be aware of and try their best to resist them (which, of course, Repubs tried to twist into meaning that she claimed that she was a biased judge, but that's a whole other kettle of corn).

The instant we see, hear or read about someone, before we've had a chance to process and direct our thoughts, our brains make all sorts of automatic judgements and evaluations that we can't consciously prevent. What we DO have control over is what we then do--or don't do.

gender,  women aren't in the inside circle much of the time, as consultants on campaigns or policy.

And yet minorities and women are a substantial portion of the base.  Power is still concentrated in white, male hands to a large degree in this country.

        •  I meant for this to include all other biases too (1+ / 0-)

including these and others. There are so many.
