even though I have on the rare occasion used the term "lily white" myself when referring to T-Party types when they have demeaned people of color, and yet as I'm white I really dislike that term.  How would someone with brown or black skin feel if I used a descriptive of their skin color to come off derogatorily? Am I being too thin-skinned about this?  I just feel it's being overused and it makes me wonder and feel like I should somehow feel bad that I'm "white."  Or maybe I should ask, what does using "lily white" mean in politics but as a demeaning remark against white voters, or consultants as the case seems to be.

    •  I'm LW and I don't mind. Self deprication by (0+ / 0-)

anyone who is traditionally privileged is the very least we could do.

I also respond to "fish-meal white" as well.

I am offended by the term "white trash" because that implies trash comes in other colors as well, but in this case, we have to explain the trash is white because we don't usually apply white to trash.

phrase on anyone of any color, we are doing more than "self-deprication" and it's wrong.  Why do it at all; why not speak to a group or race of people without being offensive? Isn't that what we aspire to, here?

Anyway, it is a thought that has crossed my mind a number of times when I read the words "lily white."  Maybe I have a knee jerk reaction to it as I did growing up when I was disrespectfully called "gringa" as if being an Anglo was a bad thing.
