  •  That's the tension. (4+ / 0-)

There's votes to be lost by being too close to black folk, in politics and in policy, and certainly by asking them to help decide GOP primaries.  There's a large enough segment of the R party that is in the R party just to avoid that.

The GOP is in that trap in a lot of ways: it wants to win, but it also wants avoid having to appeal to minorities and urbanites and others it hates from the culture wars.

    •  The only way out for the GOP (0+ / 0-)

is to shed itself of the racists loons on the fringe right and start embracing inclusive policies which will benefit everyone.  They'll lose some votes in the short term but in the long term as whites saw that their policies benefited them as well they would be less inclined to not vote GOP.  At the same time the huge gaps in minority voting between the Dems and GOP would decrease.  Hell maybe the GOP would actually get 20% of the black vote and maybe 40% of the Hispanic vote.

But of course this will never happen.  The GOP is completely beholden to the racists and bigots in their base.  They'd much prefer to hold onto that shrinking base rather than reach out to minorities and risk losing that base.
