I'm reading Piketty now and there's going to have to be break in here so I can go back and reread Milovan Djilas's "The New Class."

Djilas was a practical politician. He rose to be Vice President of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia during the Tito years. He objections to the communist ruling class run parallel to what Piketty has to say about capitalism.

Control of means of production was the key through early capitalism and early communism. Machinery and manpower benefited ruling classes in both systems.

Piketty also looks at modern financial economies. Means of production become insignificant in comparison to trading and contract terms and fraud.

      -- Capitalism
      -- Communism
      -- Financialism

I see these as fundamentally different economic systems. Financialism is the closest to feudalism for its social arrangements.

Djilas got it right in the 1950s. His "New Class" in the particulars of Yugoslavia matches well to its many cousins.

Our own American system has killed 4,000,000 people between Vietnam and Iraq. We sound more than a little like the British in India. Brutal, deadly to the natives, and loudly publicly Christian.
