  •  parallel universe -- heard of Lois Lerner? (8+ / 0-)

a couple of years ago Eli Pariser wrote "The Filter Bubble" I picked it up at NN11

he makes the point that your search history sets a frame and you then get material withing your frame and don't even know what was filtered out

the subtitle of the book is "What the internet is hiding from you"

there were some long articles recently which expanded his thesis about rather than having the whole world of information open through the web, the filters were giving one an even more restricted set of info that fit your world view

the subject line: has anyone heard of Lois Lerner? I have never heard of her

I sent an email to a bright, but conservative friend. There was the article about James Risen facing jail from the Obama administration if he doesn't reveal his sources, and then the article last week about Blackwater threatened to kill investigators who exposed their wrongdoings.

His response was that yes Blackwater was a rouge outfit, but he said what Lois Lerner had done was worse because it shifted the election through her IRS work which denied people the vote.

    say what?

in my mind this fits with the crisis of voting where 2 people out of a million are possible fraudulent votes but that justifies new rules that denies thousands of people the vote (programs like voter ID)

I did a google search on      Lois Lerner voter supression

and got all kinds of good stuff. Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limpballs, and right wing publications.

this seems to be one of those parallel universe issues we get different search results for example

    •  It started as a commercial model (6+ / 0-)

Targeting ads and peeking at whether people shopped around (Amazon trick, look at cookies before giving price).  It has crept into browsing.  It seems imprecise.  I regularly get stuff trying to steer me to National Review.  I think it is because The Pittsburgh Tribune Review (Steeler coverage), is owned by Richard Mellon-Scaife, the Blackwater / Heritage Foundation guy.

DKOS bombs me with guitar lessons (blues), Guitar Center (Bain Capital) and match maker / dating sort of crap.  The first two, I can figure out, but the last one puzzles me.

If you want to open up the searches, just go to The Blaze, Red State and Politico.  Before you know it you will get invited to the tea of the month club.

yes, she's been in the news lately. you don't see a lot about it in d-leaning publications because she's a right-wing talking point.
