    •  He got 39 percent of the vote in a five way (14+ / 0-)

race (though the real spoiler was the most prominent Independent, Eliot Cutler--who is running again this year but his numbers are not good, thank God) and thus got a higher percentage of votes than the other candidates. That's right--he was elected with 39 percent of the vote.

We would have to have a Constitutional amendment to force an automatic run-off, something I wish we would do but have not done.

Maine politics is odd, and always includes strong independent candidates. Interesting fact: Thomas Jefferson helped to draft our State Constitution as we approached statehood in 1820 (Jefferson died in 1826).

LePage rode the Tea Party wave of 2010, and now he will be riding it right back to Waterville. Fortunately, he is lame duck in a couple of ways: first, he has a Democratic legislature, and second, a peculiarity of our Constitution allows the majority party in the lege to elect the Constitutional Officers unlike in most states where they are elected by popular vote. So, the Attorney General, Secretary of State, and State Treasurer are Democrats elected by the legislature. There is no Lieutenant Governor in Maine. LePage is really twisting in the wind on this one, he has no meaningful allies in the Executive branch.
