  •  So.... (0+ / 0-)

You're telling me it was the State's intent to sign up more permit holders?  It is counterproductive.

See, knee jerk reactions don't make sense.  Why didn't the legislature pass harsher penalties for criminals caught with a stolen weapon or trying to steal one?  That may actually make a difference.  Why has the State of Connecticut continue shuttering it's metal health facilities?  That may have made a difference too.  But 88kathy wants to blame hunters - spare me your B.S.- like there was someone who condoned what happened that day.

BTW - what is December 12. 2012?  I think I can guess but like your comment, it is not accurate.

      have no sense now.

NRA, or gun clubs, or target ranges, or hunter safety classes have absolutely nothing to say about gun owners in mental crisis in their gun safety plan, and yet are the first to crow about mental health.

      Sorry December 15, 2012.

Hunters had no outrage, their only thought was to their hobby and the fear their hobby would be hobbled.  They just sit around scaring each other with 'they're gonna ban our guns'. They are useless.

      •  Maybe in your narrow (0+ / 0-)

world - but not in reality.

Trust me - I live less than 10 miles from that school - and there was no one - Man, woman, mother, father, child who did not feel the impact or did not reach out - hunter or not.

There were very few who were not for working together to find effective way to try and prevent such a tragedy.

        BTW.....

Allow me to ask a question - if it were up to you - would hunters have a reason to be concerned that

        'they're gonna ban our guns'
If your answer is yes, you may be part of the problem and not the solution.

It's how you guys scare yourselves.  Here is my boilerplate. I have repeated and repeated and repeated. For some reason it scares gun owners.

My boilerplate with no jail time at all.

          1. Improper storage of a gun - loss of physical possession of the gun - no matter the outcome - loss of privilege gun ownership for many many years.

          2. Improper handling of a gun - gun discharged inappropriately - no matter the outcome - loss of privilege gun ownership for many many years.

           Limiting of gun kill speed

          Limiting of gun ownership speed.

Also repeal of all haw haw haw that was close gun laws.
Also a safety procedure for gun owners promoted by gun owners to handle guns when the owner is having a mental crises.
That is just the low hanging fruit. Most gun problems can be handled with very little effort. The few remaining with a moderate effort. And this giant success with little or no effort will give us the will to take care of the remaining bit.

There are many ways to handle sloppy gun owners. -- there aren't 100+ million of them, there aren't 30 million of them. There might be 10,000 and 80% of those would scurry back to their bunker if they fell out of favor.

          •  Quite frankly (0+ / 0-)

I don't have a problem with any thing you stated.

            1.  I think "storage" needs some definition - is it a safe only?  A lock box, trigger locks?  Personally, I think trigger locks and storing ammo in a lock box is the only form that could work - there are people who live in situations where they could not put a safe in their residence - some people also travel with firearms so a lock box and trigger locks are transportable as well and neither cost a boat load of money.

            2.  Agree 100% - but you also need to define improper handling and it can't include someone watching someone take an unloaded rifle out of their car trunk and they got scared and called 911 as they drove by.  As far as the discharge - there's no such thing as a gun being discharged by accident unless you're at a shooting range or on a hunt, ready to fire and there's a malfunction.  But that's rare, very rare.  99.999% of the time it's negligence.

I don't know what haw haw haw is.

If guns and ammo are properly stored  - that is half of the safety plan - but I don't think there is a fail safe mental crisis plan - I think that's where you can have any plan or any law and it's like swiss cheese.  On gun permits, it asks questions pertaining to a persons mental heath - but how would the police check unless people or the state wants to grant them access to medical history records.  Look at that kid in California who shot up the school because girls wouldn't sleep with him - the police got calls from the family and still were not allowed to act - and it's tough - it's not like someone couldn't call in a false report as well.  Those scenarios, while you can have laws and plans - people who are mentally ill - do they really care or are they even capable of caring?

            •  If the NRA, gun clubs, target ranges weren't (0+ / 0-)

scaring the crap out of everyone with this gun ban boogyman, maybe they could come up with a plan. They are, after all, the gun experts.
