Right now, nuclear and fossil-fueled generation is relatively inexpensive compared with the cost of solar energy.
They need to specify whether they are talking about existing coal- and nuclear- powered generation, or whether they are talking about new construction.

Quite frankly the $/kW cost for new construction has skyrocketed for both coal and nuclear. The latest coal-fired power plant to come online (Prairie State Generating Station) is so far over budget, that the municipalities and rural coops that were scammed into investing in this project will be carrying the expensive burden for decades.

And pretty much all of the recent plans for new nuclear construction in the U.S. have been shelved.

When it comes to traditional "baseload" generation, natural gas powered combined cycle combustion turbines are now the default.

power plants to shut down or convert to natural gas over ten years ago. New pipelines were brought in from Canada and Texas (I think). The DPU was harshly criticized by the utilities and the CofCommerce warning the price of electricity would skyrocket.

Just as most of the plants converted to gas (which took years and 100's of millions of dollars), the price of natural gas dropped like a rock. So did the cost of electricity.

Nobody said thank you to the DPU. :-)

to convert to natural gas is a bad thing. As NG consumption ramps up and conventional reserves get "tapped out", the push for deep well fracking will get stronger and stronger.

I believe that such fracking may prove to be one of the absolute worst extraction disasters ever, and getting the consumers (and the utilities who will need to amortize 50-year-lifespan plants) addicted to natural gas will be a jump out of the frying pan right into the fire. :-(
