In my experience, there are way too many contractors that simply do shitty work, even when they have been trained and licensed. I also am of the mindset that a person can tackle just about ANY project if they really put their mind to it. Vermont has lots of sub-par contractors who have saddled homeowners with leaky, substandard homes - I know more than a few!

Luckily, in rural Vermont a homeowner is given plenty of legal room to do things themsleves - I have built my house from the ground up, including all plumbing, wiring, radiant heating, and installing an automated 10K propane backup generator. I did all the gas line construction between any appliances and the tank,  the gas company did the final connections and leak testing ( after I have done my OWN). And yes, the propane company doesn't like me doing my own work, because its money they aren't getting. Tough cookies.

And my work is BETTER than theirs, which goes for $100 an hour. They do sloppy looking work. Thank God they only had to spend 2 hours doing the final connections - running the gas lines took me several days, which would have cost thousands.

    DIY is my battle cry!
