  •  I don't think that (26+ / 0-)

fewer abortions was actually their goal.  They seem to want two things:

    - An end to women having sex outside of marriage; and
    - Women who do have sex outside of marriage to be punished and shamed by being forced to bear children they do not want

I think they actually liked the Bad Old Days when women who had abortions were at severe risk for dying or sustaining serious injuries.  It served them right! (Never mind that many of those women were married women who simply could not afford to have another child).

The goals of these conservatives really seems to be to turn the clock back an indefinite amount of years to the Time That Never Was, and force women back into the home.  Birth control threatens this agenda, which is why they are against it.

even sex within a marriage should only be for procreation, and not for sinful pleasure.

Notwithstanding our collective DNA.  Or history.

George Lakoff's interpretation of the Strict Father model of the family--the conservative model--fits with what you're saying. That model says that teenaged girls have no business having sex. If they get pregnant, it is morally wrong for them to get away with their misconduct by letting them have an abortion. They must accept the consequences or they won't learn to do what's right, instead of just doing whatever feels good at the moment.

Teenagers who have had abstinence-only sex education, but who have sex and get pregnant anyway, are simply people who have not developed the self-discipline to do what's right. So even though these teenagers are their own daughters, the Strict Father parents would not blame the education: they would blame their daughter's failure to be self-disciplined.

Lakoff also says that conservatives tend to stereotype the women who want abortions as either those teenagers who should not have been having sex, or women who think their careers are more important than motherhood. So no abortions for you. They're not considering, for example, the possibility that their daughter did not lack self-discipline, but was sexually assaulted.
