  •  Depends on 1) density of structures in proximity (0+ / 0-)

    to the epicenter, 2) type of soil/rock structures are built on, and 3) shallowness of the epicenter.  
      Whittier Narrows felt particularly hard because it was in a densely populated area with older buildings, and was relatively shallow.  And it felt hard to me (less than 40 miles away) because the house I was in at the time was built on sandy soil.  Had I left for work 5 min. earlier I would have been on the road and maybe not felt it.
