and I'm not very computer savvy. Maybe it's nothing I should be concerned about, but I'll talk with my CS-degreed SIL before I install.

    •  It's (likely) nothing to be worried about. (6+ / 0-)

I'll look at the source for the plugin tonight once I'm off work (assuming it's open-sourced), but given that he's getting this information from APIs that are not his, it's polite to cache the query results locally and poll from there going forward rather than slamming any APIs that the plugin queries every time you mouseover a Congresscritter's name.

    •  What's wrong with (0+ / 0-)

disabling pr0n mode whenever you visit political sites?

Because that's all private browsing does, is hide your tracks from others using the same physical computer.

Incognito does prevent some commercial tracking, but it's mostly a feel-good extension.  The consequential powers can track you regardless of your browser extensions.

I say this as someone who uses extensions that provide the functionality of Incognito, and more.

      •  You're asking the wrong question (0+ / 0-)

It's not about "what's wrong with..."

It's about "why do you have to?"

And actually, in this day and age, I'd be 1000 percent more comfortable surfing a pr0n site with an open browser than a political website.

        •  That's just it, (0+ / 0-)

The FBI/NSA can track you regardless of your browser.  Unless you use an anonymizer like tor, you may as well not use anything (even tor isn't necessarily safe).

Mostly, browser extensions can keep you from being annoyed by ads.  They make it harder for corporations to target you with advertising.

Hiding your political activities with pr0n browsing mode?  Utterly futile.
