  •  There was a lot more to 1968 Dem (6+ / 0-)

The presumptive winner had just been murdered a few weeks before.

There was unrest about the war percolating all year, unrelated to the convention, but contributing to the general mood.

Mayor Daley was running the city with an iron hand and adding to the tension going on outside.

Convention management was incompetent and tried to ignore the feelings of the attendees and tried to run roughshod over the proceedings. Example - the convention opened with a film tribute to RFK. Emotions were raw and the applauding went on for over 15 minutes, eventually going into rhythmic clapping as an outpouring of grief. Instead of allowing people to express their grief for as long as it took, the showrunners tried to shut everyone up so they could get back to the scheduled agenda. All that emotion and no place to direct it, so grief turned to rage against the guy on stage.

I remember all of it clearly because I was there, even though I was a little kid at the time.

Short story - none of those things are in play today. GOP convention may be a cluster, but it won't be anything like 68.

Particularly given how many of these whack jobs refuse to leave the house without their guns.

The hypocrisy will be clear as day if guns are banned from the event.

Cleveland, not Dallas.  Sorry, Ohio, but Texas isn't nuts enough for them.  Sucks to be you.

1968 is burned into my brain. I still conjure the smell of teargas as I recall the horrors of that year.

The convention was just one more zit on the nose of 1968.

Sure, none of those things are in play today. There will be other things in play.

No matter what we do, the right wing will manufacture their own imaginary worst nightmare scenario.

      Then we win.

    •  Let's just say it will be a stand-alone cluster- (0+ / 0-)

fuck without any external props, stimulants, or causes.

I hope it's televised for those who have the stomach to watch anti-Americanism in action.
