    ... but thought it was just meant as a general symbol contrasting "liberty" and "bondage" -- which it could indeed be.  But I had no idea of the definite reference to American slavery.

    Now, of course, Republicans will want to tear down the Statue of Liberty:  "How dare those elitist French lecture us!"

    Another little-known fact, although one not as serious:  The Statue of Liberty's name is Charlotte.  The face was modeled on that of the sculptor's mother's, and her name was Charlotte.  

    So in my family now we like to call her Charlotte Liberty.
