They pointed out that there was an extraordinary total of deaths over the July 4th weekend, but there was no specific "wave of violence" in one place or another. They didn't quite say that media were jumping on the magic number of "100 dead," because, after all, they were, too, but they were debunking the "army of wilding youth killing indiscriminately" reports.

If we took the per capita murder rate of Chicago, Atlanta, New York, Boston, and Detroit, and we took the gun death per capita rates, and we expressed Chicago's 4th of July weekend rate, I wonder if it represented a fantastical change?

"Chicago" is and has been a national target for front line Republican discourse. "Chicago equals Obama," so "Chicago is bad." The rather extensive media focused on "Obama is Stalin" now has the same creative energy devoted toward "Chicago is a Hellscape."

I have to disagree with the diarist, though, about Guard deployments. They don't mean imposition of martial law. They operate by uniform code of justice for themselves, but their rules for engagement are set by their commanders and the authorities who call them. They can be pure civilian aid. I think people mean to call them out to have a "cop" (person with a gun) on every corner all the time; that assumes the killings are from predictable, wild streets and that the gangs will be intimidated. They're not thinking it through: they're responding emotionally.

"for all the murders, rapes, and thefts,/ Committed in the horrid lust of war,/ He that unjustly caus'd it first proceed,/ Shall find it in his grave and in his seed." -- Webster, "The White Devil," IV i 8-12.

of reporters who talk about murder in Chicago, as if it's just desserts for Obama's reelection.

also a really good point about the data in context, something no news media seems to know how to report.

neighbors told me the 4th is used by the local gangs as a  "revenge day." because the police get so many calls about fireworks and people confuse fireworks with gunplay so gangs use that day / weekend to settle  old scores...don't know if it's true or not...but there were lot's of fireworks going off and guns, so there could be some truth to it...
