  •  On drug legalization: (4+ / 0-)

Here is an interview with Martin Horn,  formerly New York City Commissioner of Correction and Probation.

Mr. Horn was interviewed by Alec Baldwin for Alec's weblog "Here's the Thing".  At one point Baldwin asked Horn about drug legalization.  His reply: legalize all of them.  Baldwin, after he picked his jaw off the floor asked, "well, what about Heroin and drugs like that?"  Horn replied, "sell them through the liquor stores, tax the hell out of them and apply the proceeds to drug prevention and treatment efforts."

This is a guy who started out as a probation officer and worked his way up through the correctional system.  He has seen the utter failure of the "war on drugs" and will have none of it.

      with him.

      Legalize all and tax.

In short order (not overnight of course) gang fighting will be over.  Overdoses will go down also, since the purity and consistency of legal drugs will be better.

We will always have drug addicts, just like we will always have alcoholics.  But without all the turf fighting and illegal economy from the war on drugs, we will have way less collateral damage to neighborhoods and uninvolved bystanders.

But of course the law enforcement industry (prisons, weapons makers, law enforcement gadget makers, lawyers) are all against it.  If drugs were legal, their business would dry up too.
