  •  Probably Anzalduas Park (5+ / 0-)

They took a helicopter tour of it just before their boat "patrol."  http://www.valleycentral.com/...

My parents retired to that area and lived there for a number of years. Anzalduas Park is a beautiful place, and especially good for birding. Here is a description of it: http://www.thedauphins.net/...

      •  I saw my first (and only) Long-Billed Curlew ... (0+ / 0-)

there. What an impressive bird, with the longest beak of any shorebird, with the possible exception of the Far Eastern Curlew. The beak is so long that it actually looks deformed.

        •  There is a refuge in New Mexico (0+ / 0-)

where I saw a Whooping Crane with a flock of Sand Hill Cranes. It is really exciting, isn't it, to have a first sighting of something like a Long-Billed Curlew or Whooping Crane. My heart was beating so hard I was dizzy.:)

Whooping Cranes are still endangered (although no longer critically so), while Long-Billed Curlews are officially now of Least Concern, although they were once much more scarce. But I live on the East Coast, and while there are apparently a few of them here every winter, I'd certainly never seen one. They're apparently common in winter in South Texas, though (although I don't think they were so common back in the early 1980s, when I saw this one).

A piece of trivia: Candlestick Point (and its namesake Candlestick Park) were named after the Long-Billed Curlew, which was apparently locally called a candlestick bird. But by the time Candlestick Park had been built, they had been extirpated from that area, although I understand that there are now a few of them on the Central California coast.

San Marcos when I saw a really strange bird in a dead tree. I turned around and went back. I parked and we looked at each other for awhile. I couldn't wait to get home and grab my bird book. It is a Northern Crested Caracara. I saw two in a field another day and two flying over Lockhart.

I have a very small gray bird with a tinge of yellow on it's stomach in my mimosa trees. I can't find it in my books. It stays here all summer. I live in southeastern Oklahoma. I wish I could identify it. It stays up high in the blooms.

That is really interesting about how Candlestick Park got it's name. I am going to Google the Long-Billed Curlew.
