  •  fortunately, this doesn't spread very far. (0+ / 0-)

Assume the scenario I believe is a reasonable threat:

An Al Qaeda member turns himself into a suicide bioterror weapon by getting infected, flying to New York, and spending the week on the subways spreading virus by contact with his infectious sweat.  Then when he's too sick to stand, he checks into the hospital, picks up the bedside phone, and calls the Rush Limbaugh show to announce what he did.

Realistically we are looking at a few hundred primary cases at most, and then a few thousand more secondary cases: their spouses and children.  But since contact with body fluids is required for transmission, it won't spread past that point.

It would be another 9/11 for sure, but only that: a few thousand casualties in total, not even as many as we get from the yearly flu strains (about 20,000 - 40,000).  It will not be a slate-wiper: not even close.

Realistically, even though many of us are two degrees of separation from a 9/11 victim, that is not the same thing as one degree of separation, and not the same thing as being a victim oneself.

We got the future back. Uh-oh.
