if it is true for SSDI recipients, but I do know that SSI recipients can't have more than 1000$ in their checking account beyond a determined period of time (at the moment I can't recall how long; sorry). SSI recipients can't own anything of real value either. They can own a car as long as it values below a certain Kelly Blue Book dollar amount. They can't own a life insurance policy that might be borrowed against or anything like that.

Every three to five years both the means and the medical condition of the recipient are re-evaluated. It's very hard to live on and equally hard to transition out of.

As SSDI is paid from the tax(premium)you pay while working your assets play no part in eligibility. Supplemental Security Income is a minimal payment paid to individuals without enough work units to qualify for SSDI.

A unit in 2014 is earned by having earnings of $1200 for a total of 4 units would mean earning $1200 in each quarter of  the year.  If you are disabled at age 31 or older, you generally need at least 20 credits in the 10 years immediately before you became disabled.

As you grow older the number of credits increases incrementally until age 62 when you need 40. SSDI is insurance we all pay for with payroll taxes.

SSI is supplemental income for our less fortunate citizens. that mosty have never been capable of working.
