    As I understand it, the closed NC hospital was a CAH (Critical Access Hospital).  I live outside a rural town, and our hospital is also a CAH.  I thought this was a designation made by the federal government, and the hospital must fall within well articulated guidelines.  I also thought the feds helped subsidize the hospital.  I believe this is how our antiquated 19th century hospital was replaced with a new one--with the aid of federal subsidies.  If so, how can a private company simply close a CAH hospital?
