  •  This isn't about California (6+ / 0-)

Sure, there might be some benefits Draper and his buddies could generate for themselves from this, but look what happens when you add five states to the union: you get 10 new Senators. And since at least 4 of these shiny new states would shade bright red, 8 of those 10 Senators would be Republican for a long time. Would definitely shift the balance of power in the Senate.

I don't think more than 2 or 3, but in any case, I bet he sees more than one benefit. I suspect for him state taxes are a big draw.

      •  But... (6+ / 0-)

        ...then he's pretty ignorant.

The "silicon valley" state would displace Massachusetts as the brightest blue state in the country.  All of the infrastructure for Silicon Valley is in the Bay Area.   Three of his states are solid blue states.  Only one is a solid red state (the one that connects Kern County to the Central Valley).  The OC state is basically a red state but quite contestable, and "Jefferson" is likely to adopt a cannabis-related economy (well, they're likely to profit from the one that's already there).

And if some Silicon Valley guy decides to move a big chunk of business to one of the lesser populated states, it will turn blue faster than you can say "New Hampshire."

Of course this is all a lot of mental masturbation.  The referendum is not all that likely to pass.  If it does, the California legislature will not consent.  And if somehow they did, the US congress would simply not go along with it.

Very red, but not very bright, is more likely.
