The Diary states:

Grimes’s campaign has raised almost \$11.3 million in all, with an average contribution of \$25 from almost 84,000 supporters, according to a statement from the campaign.
The math does not work.

\$25 average donation from 84,000 supporters would be \$2.1million.

For the math to work and not be dishonest - 84,000 contributors have averaged \$25 contributions 5-times apiece.

Either the average donation/contributor is over \$125/person, or Grimes has received more than 84,000 donations.

Either way, this is still a successful haul and indicative of thousands of Kentucky voters being 'invested' in Alison Grimes.

I don't live in KY - but have made multiple donations to ALG....hmmm!    You made an assumption that donors only make one donation - and I can guarantee that you are wrong...my CC bills prove it

In other words, you show that I was correct.

84,000.  They said 84,000 contributors, not 84,000 donations.  Some of those people maxed out in one donation,  which skews the average donation.  But some gave multiple smaller donations.  So the contributors could be 84,000 and the average donation could be \$25 but some of the 84,000 gave way more than \$25, some gave in multiple donations of, say, \$50 or \$100 or \$200, some may give monthly at \$10 or \$25.  The individual donation number could be more like 400,000 in this way, even if the contributors is 84,000, if enough people give multiple times.

They also said they got donations from every Kentucky county and every state in the union.

• ##### One of the ongoing confusions whenever (0+ / 0-)

stats are reported is that the word "average" is used in reference to the mean OR the median.

So it's quite possible they mean the median, not the mean.

To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.
