    Why wasn't one enough?

Perhaps one didn't describe each type as well?

Dust and sand storms which come off the Sahara Desert are locally known as a simoom or simoon (sîmūm, sîmūn). The haboob (həbūb) is a sandstorm prevalent in the region of Sudan around Khartoum, with occurrences being most common in the summer.

    •  Two names. Different phenomena. (6+ / 0-)

Sandstorm -- you get that in dry months with winds off the high ground in New Mexico. Lasts a day at most, makes the sky a brownish-red color.

Dust Storm -- big rolling huge black blot-out-the-sun clouds of dirt, coming down from Kansas and the Dakotas, lasting as many as 72 hours in a row. Because it's dry as a bone all over and has been for years. You can't breathe in your house without you hang wet sheets over the windows and doors.

We use different names to be more specific about the impacts.

        •  Neither one of these is a damned "haboob," though (0+ / 0-)

          haboob

strong wind that occurs along the southern edges of the Sahara in The Sudan and is associated with large sandstorms and duststorms and may be accompanied by thunderstorms. It usually lasts about three hours, is most common during the summer, and may blow from any direction. A haboob may transport huge quantities of sand or dust, which move as a dense wall that can reach a height of 900 metres (about 3,000 feet). The term haboob is taken from the Arabic word habb meaning wind.

Sandstorms here don't come with thunderstorms.
They do come from one particular direction -- winds from the west/northwest.They're not common in the summertime. We get 'em in March, sometimes early April, or the fall -- sometimes as late as November. And we're not on the southern edge of the Chihuahuan desert -- we're northeast of it. The black clouds of dirt that go on for days always come out of the north.

Inaccurate language is a sorry tool no matter how sexy you think it sounds.

Always come from the leading edge of a early blaster of a thunderstorm.

So at least in that sense it is accurate. Sometimes.  there are dust storms across the freeway but that is from the cotton fields.

Ok stuck with only a phone for a bit. Hard to get used to.

Yes we do kinda the mountains block off the North mostly dust storms happen from SW to NE here almost always.

The haboob however is just like described. A wall of sand and dirt leading a thunderstorm and they come from any direction picking up dirt as they go. Only after a long dry spell though, once it rains a couple times no more haboob till next year. I have great pics of one down in the valley, far enough I felt like I was level with the wall top

We get most of our wind fro the sw and moisture from the SE it's been very wet so far hope it keeps up....supposed to be a couple days break, before it really starts again,I hope to get the roof coated tomorrow, going to go up and give the coating a good stir tonight when the sun sets.......hope it's all still good, too expensive to waste
