While obviously I wasn't present, I don't believe that the Pope's meeting was for purposes of "fortifying an alliance" between the Catholic Church and the American religious right.  This Pope has met with Muslim and Jewish leaders too.

I'm not Catholic, and I'm never going to agree with the Church's position on many social issues.  But the fact remains that this Pope strongly has criticized unfettered capitalism whereas our President has not.

    •  Met ONLY with evangelicals, allies in the religiou (6+ / 0-)

right. He has not met with US mainline Protestants, black Christian leaders nor US progressive Jews or Muslims.

Other than Obama, the pope has ONLY met with US rightwingers: Coe, Green, Weigel, Carl Anderson. Who knows what is kept secret.

He has appointed or promoted ZERO men to the episcopacy who would be viewed as progressive.

capitalism  (as Benedict did in Australia), he sold off all the church's capitalistic/real estate holdings... right?

      •  The church is selling underutilized churches (0+ / 0-)

throughout the world. I bet you could get a deal on one in a city near you.

        •  I do love seeing those buildings (0+ / 0-)

turned into loft apartments and artists communes. They have to sell to pay for the lawsuits. It has nothing to do with morality and/or capitalism unless you look at it as a payment for their immorality.

due to fidelity to the teachings of Jesus. It is selling the churches that it can no longer staff. That money goes into the central coffers, it isn't distributed to the poor.

        •  The Church is not divesting itself of billions and (0+ / 0-)

billions in stocks, bonds, valuable real estate and gold. Nor has this pope requested that any of his bishops or superiors of thousands of religious orders do so.
