and ignore that the US without being majority catholic or even majority Christian who oppose birth control, a secular democracy in theory is as much as part of the problem, if not a great deal more of it than the Pope.  The Pope may have great influence, but the US turns it into policy in third world countries in ways the pope can't.  We do more harm.  We are worse.

And few people in the developed world listen to the pope on birth control, catholic or not.  They don't listen on any of the social issues.   But he takes away the argument of the right wing evangelicals that greed makes you a good christian.  It is a war of many fronts.  Emphasis on the evil of the pope is too narrow in my opinion.

do not get to go to their drugstores to get birth control. They rely on international government programs to help them.  Now please go and trace the thread of who was behind the withdrawl of US support for International Planned Parenthood funding.

I don't think the Pope is evil.  I think he represents and foster and nurtures evil in the world as has his institution for 2000 years.  Can't put it any plainer than that.

that poor people in poor countries and THE US don't get their birth control at the local drug store and rely on agencies such as Planned Parenthood to help them.  But even without the Catholic Church,  the right wing evangelicals in this country would oppose birth control and abortion.  Wingers down here abound in huge numbers and will tell you that Catholics aren't even Christian, they are evil.  They aren't listening to the pope and their congressional represenatives aren't responding to the pope.  One idea can exist between two groups for different reasons.

shown how the evangelical Protestants and the Catholics have joined hands on issues such as this and put aside the opinions of each other to reach the same goal. And there are lots of Catholic members of Congress too. They both work behind the scenes (lobbying, which shouldn't happen with tax exempt groups, but does all the time) to de-fund birth control and abortion monies when bills on foreign aid come up.  They have been quite successful too.

    •  The Catholic church's stance that birth control is (0+ / 0-)

evil is what invented and now enables the rights lunatic stance on this issue.

We can, at the ballot box, overturn government policy.

The insanity of what comes out of the Vatican is going to take more doing.
