  •  I have a fundie sister and bigot brother (18+ / 0-)

with the exact same attitudes.  My sister sees no problem with constantly inquiring about the state of my soul and salvation, though I've tried to politely tell her to knock it off.  It's like there's a script in her head that she can't stop.

Brother is a bigot and mega-conservative who lives with my mother, is on unemployment and receiving food stamps, but hates the government and those "other" people receiving the very benefits he's getting.  According to him, he's "earned" them.

They both vote, and they vote for Republicans/Tea Partiers exclusively.  As you can imagine, family gatherings are tedious and painful.

    •  Would you please consider writing a diary (4+ / 0-)

about how you came to be the liberal in your family? I think we should be understanding and learning as much as we can and people like yourself have much to tell us.

Ask your sister to read Luke 6:42 and then to please act accordingly.

How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,' when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
You wouldn't even have to neutralize the gender.

He lived in subsidized housing, but somehow he earned it and other people didn't.

That being said, there really are lifers on government assistance. Their numbers are overstated, but they do exist. However, they cost the government less than, say, cops claiming fraudulent disability retirements.

      •  Thay also cost a good deal less than the 1% (0+ / 0-)

who avoid paying what little tax they owe.
