    It's a mentality that the government is willing to spend money to maintain people in poverty and dependency indefinitely, but not willing to spend money to actually build them up.  He believes that neither the government nor society would have had any problem with him staying on "food stamps and 'welfare'" forever, but the minute he tried to better his situation, he felt like he was on his own and nobody cared.

    Domestic politics is the continuation of civil war by other means.

      That is precisely the explanation of the cognitive dissonance by  libertarians and conservatives who are on stamps and SSI and welfare. They have an ego trip where they were somehow stronger and smarter than the average rube to rise out of social welfare.

      And if you think you were exceptional, what do you think about the other people on government programs? Obviously they need some tough love to get them off their asses.
