    That explains consciously supporting people you know are screwing you over, because you feel inferior to them and that you deserve to be screwed over as a consequence. The other part is more about "culture" and identity, being manipulated over issues like abortion, gay marriage, guns, elitist liberals who think they're better than you, etc., by people who give two shit's about such issues except to the extent that they can be exploited to win elections.

    We are, to a large extent, culturally and socially, still an agrarian peasant society composed of unsophisticated, superstitious, insecure and gullible people who, yes, it's true, absolutely cling to their guns and religion when times are tough--and times are tough, by design. It's not just rural people who think this way. There are plenty of urban working class types who are like this. Think Archie Bunker. They're still out there, in droves.

    I don't know what it's going to take to fix this. We continue to be haunted by certain cultural, social and structural problems unique in the developed world, that seem to stay with us from generation to generation.
