If you have any tech info to show the following is incorrect, by all means say so.

What I know about US intel satellites is:

The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) is responsible for our intelligence satellites.  They have a number of these up at any given time.  Some of them are in orbits that enable taking pictures of the entire globe, so they are only periodically over any given point.  Some of them are stationary such as to concentrate on particular geographic areas, typically "hot spots" where trouble is likely, and Ukraine would almost certainly be on that list.

The stationary ones may take still photos or video, continuously or on a scheduled basis or on command.  They are very high-res, as in, sufficient to identify individual persons on the ground, using means other than their faces (there's no need to discuss the "how" of this).

IF there is a stationary NRO satellite above Ukraine, which is highly likely given the situation in Ukraine: Then it should have picked up something, including heat trails from the jet and from the missile.

IF it picked up any signs of the missile:  Then NRO analysts would be able to judge where the missile originated: either directly by having video of the launch, or indirectly by analyzing the heat trail.

There's also a decent chance NSA has Ukraine on the priorities list, and would be intercepting all relevant internet and telephone activity as well as ground radio.  That would get us phone calls, email, and internet postings by various actors including the Ukraine rebels.

I'm intrigued at the fact that there were social media postings about this, and also a purported transcript of a phone call.  There's no way NSA would release that sort of stuff, so it must have come from other sources.  Captures of social media posts could have been made by interested civilians.

One smoking gun in this situation is the social media posting by a Ukraine rebel leader claiming responsibility for the shoot-down.  The fact that he posted it early in the situation and then deleted the posting shortly after it was determined that this was a civilian jet liner, is "very interesting," and is typical of the behavior of guilty actors:  posting a news item about a terrorist act before it hits the MSM, and then deleting it when it points to their guilt.

We got the future back. Uh-oh.
