shooting down a civilian airliner with a SAM is a demonstration of stunning military incompetence. Boasting of doing this is stunning political incompetence and allowing "commanders," to do so indicates that the "separatists," are not under any formal system of military or political control.

American media immediately begin to attack Putin for this incident, some claiming this is an act of retaliation by proxy forces for increasing the level of sanctions by the USA, as alleged by Congress-person Ryan on MSNBC on the "Ed Show." This is ridiculous war-mongering and suggests that America can, in some way, use this to threaten or manipulate Putin.

The inability of the US State Dept. and the President to understand the basis and limits of American power in this situation is incredible. The idiocy of Congress, especially in the person of John McCain, is to be expected, the stumbling blundering of the rest of the government is inexplicable. If the US government doesn't get a firm grip on its policies and develops an effective strategy soon, we will blunder into war in the Ukraine.

    •  Eastern Ukraine is chaos (5+ / 0-)

At least 40 different armed groups in Donbass,

    •  So Putin bears no responsibility for this? (0+ / 0-)

Did the US bear responsibility for the death squads we trained that operated in Central America? After all they weren't US troops (even though many of the "separatists" are Russian military or intelligence officers).

You may think that the separatists are justified, but I don't believe a reasonable person could think that they are not supported by Russia.

When we stop putting leaders from the past up on pedestals and ignoring their flaws, we can start seeing our present leaders for what they really are.

      •  My post is not about "separatists" or Putin's (0+ / 0-)

culpability, it is about American foreign policy, which has proven inadequate to the situation. Crushing sectoral sanctions should already be on Russia and we should be demanding peace talks from the "separatists." and demanding Ukraine to sit down with them now.
