  •  The flight data recorders probably won't tell (8+ / 0-)

us much that we don't know already.

The cockpit voice recorders may contain the crew's last words and possibly a message to their loved ones before they died, if the missile didn't immediately kill them. That's something the family should be able to hear as it might be comforting for them. The black boxes should be turned over, if not for investigative reasons, for humanitarian reasons.

I didn't mean to imply the theft of these boxes isn't important.  It only makes things look worse for the Russians and the pro-Russian separatists.

there wouldn't be time for any messages. Just a terrible, violent end.

      •  no opposite (0+ / 0-)

We know the people on the Pan Am flight had time to scribble messages.  It took a long time for them to fall from the sky and they knew they were doomed the entire way down.  Horrible way to go.

You can't breath at 33,000 feet.

          •  ksuwildkat is right (0+ / 0-)

people do survive the long fall. We know this from their autopsies, and there were at least 2 who lived for a short time after they reached the ground from PanAm 103. It's a terrible way to go.

    •  Immediate kill. They wouldn't know what hit them. (0+ / 0-)
      •  That's how you know it was a missile. (0+ / 0-)

There's often no sound in the cockpit before it happens.

What they want to know is if the ground troops gave them any warning to get out of the airspace.

        •  Unlikely (0+ / 0-)

First, they'd have to know what frequencies the aircraft radios happened to be tuned to in order to send them a message. And how would they know that?

Second, by definition if they sent it on a frequency the aircraft would hear, it would be on a frequency that the aircraft was using to communicate, therefore other people would hear it.

Third, if they gave a warning that means they knew it was a civilian aircraft Ukraine (if they thought it was an enemy aircraft, they wouldn't give warning) which means that they deliberately fired on civilians. Not exactly helping the cause there.
