    the Reagan Administration and Pakistan armed the very conservative Mujahedeen instead of the moderate faction around Ahmad Shah Massoud.  Massoud was too socialist-like and independent for them.

    Massoud is the guy who was trying to warn the world about an impending major terrorist attack and was assassinated by Al Qaeda 2 days prior to 9/11.

    There also is a moderate faction with socialist-like tendencies in Syria: The Kurds.  I somehow doubt that the U.S. is planning to arm them, though, even though we probably should be, as they merely fight to protect the areas where they live and have no grand dreams of wresting complete control over the country.
