  •  Hice = why we need mental health electoral reform (10+ / 0-)

I'm serious. A law needs to be enacted requiring all candidates for federal office to undergo a mental health evaluation with the results publicly-released.

    •  Clever way to empty DC, are you trying for a... (8+ / 0-)

    •  The Constitution is perfectly, vaguely clear about (6+ / 0-)

      what constitutes an eligible candidate:

      Article I

      Section II
No person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the age of twenty five years, and been seven years a citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an inhabitant of that state in which he shall be chosen.

      25 years old, ok
Been a US Citizen at least 7 years, ok
Live in the State of the District you are running for, ok

Nothing there about behavior. I'm pretty sure we can't do anything about that, without amending the Constitution, which is in modern America about as likely as winning the Lottery, twice, in one day.

is a serious wackadoodle. How anyone can vote for him with a straight face is beyond me. He gives Tennessee's Stacey Campfield ("don't say gay") some serious competition in the nutbag sweepstakes.

      •  it's Paul Broun's old seat... (5+ / 0-) in Paul "evolution is a lie from the pit of hell" Broun. Being a wackadoodle in that district isn't a bug, it's a feature.

      •  The district itself is bipolar (0+ / 0-)

I live in the sane, very liberal Athens.  I work next door in the sane, very conservative Oconee County.  Everyone else in the district is stark raving mad.

It's a pity too, because it's the rural folks who are hurt the most by conservative policies.

          •  Not Athens, or Watkinsville (1+ / 0-)

Watkinsville/Oconee is well enough off that the worst Republican policies don't affect them as much.  Shitty schools?  Not in Oconee county, where the average income is $75K/year!

Athens is progressive enough that we can overcome the foul stench of a lot of state policies and do our own thing.  The roads here get repaved with bike lanes.  Prior to the ACA, the local county health department provided inexpensive healthcare on a sliding scale to the poor (in a facility within walking distance from public housing.)  We have a mass transit system that, while not great by any stretch, can allow someone to survive without a car in town.  Sprawl was under control for a while there (it's gotten a bit worse in the last year unfortunately.)  New apartments for students are being built that is forcing the older housing prices down a bit.

We are still one of the poorer counties in the nation here in Athens, but we have enabled subsistence at those poverty levels to be bearable.

Someone who is as poor as the average resident of our city who lives in a more rural county would be utterly destitute - no car, no health care accessible, nothing.
