  •  Not convinced that a VAT favors the rich. (0+ / 0-)

Especially if one exempted groceries and drugs.

I know that a VAT is a regressive tax, but it hits a Mercedes harder than it hits a Honda, and it hits that Mercedes even if it was paid for with stock dividends and capital gains.

The current tax structure -- especially if you include payroll taxes -- seems worse than any VAT could be.

To make the current system fairer would be to tax capital gains as ordinary income, and close enough of the damn loopholes that allow the rich to park their money indefinitely offshore rather than pay income on it. I think those differences in the existing system would make it a lot more fair.

Of course, you have a snowball's chance in Hades of seeing those reforms pass anytime soon, but the blueprint is pretty clear.

And no more "payroll" taxes.  They can be targetted "income" taxes.

        And you know what?
I'm fine with the rich getting Social Security.
I'm fine with scaling benefits to match.
I'm not fine with the middle class subsidizing the poor while the rich figure they're too good to match the relative contribution.
