  •  And the costs of such government oversight? (4+ / 0-)

It costs enough money and time when for-profit business try to follow such a game plan.   I can't imagine how many counselors would be needed for this kind of get-out-of-poverty planning.

Unless, of course, Republicans wanted to computerize it.  In that case, the contracts to develop the system would go to business friends, and the computer system would have no humanity---it would probably be designed to have little margin and end up throwing a lot of people on the street.

      1. Leftists suggest a plan to help people.
      2. Rightists agree that people need help
      3. It's necessary (common sense)  that we make sure
that no evil "takers" cheat the system.
      4. We get a system that costs more and helps fewer people than if we just gave away money to anyone who asked.

      •  Yup. Pretty much sums it up. (1+ / 0-)

To the left, it's more important to help people, even if someone "undeserving" slips through now and then.

To the right, it's more important to stop the cheaters, even if a "decent" person is refused help now and then.  (Or massively!)

Pretty clear which view is based on the basic presumption that all men/women are created equal, and which one is based on assumptions that some people are fundamentally worthier than others.
