does leave something to be desired, though. Soulless, with a big blank wall facing a street that's quickly becoming a favorite of pedestrians. It's 1980s meets 2010s!

Well, the actual halls are as awful as any other.

But the atrium area in between halls has walls of windows. So it's bright with a pretty nice view.

But pretty much, every major convention center I've been INSIDE is a dark cavern. And when you're building that sort of building, there is only so much you can do with the exterior.

      •  But national political conventions (0+ / 0-)

aren't held in convention centers; they're held in indoor sports arenas, i.e. basketball/hockey facilities.

      •  Portland's is OK. It's better integrated into the (0+ / 0-)

street grid than most and it thankfully doesn't look like Epcot Center - just two tasteful glass spires.

LA's has gotten better, now that LA Live has basically expanded to its doorstep and the Metro Blue Line makes walking up Figueroa less of a mountain goat hike.  But it's still right next to the Harbor Freeway/Santa Monica Freeway interchange, which is hardly a pleasant place.

speeches anyhow. It has a larger seating capacity, at least on paper.

And unlike many arenas, the convention would have to schedule around only one professional sporting team, not two, or more.
