    Population peaked at over 900k in 1950 and has been declining ever since. I can't imagine what it's like for a city once that size to lose population like that. NYC peaked in 1950, declined, peaked again in 1970 and then lost 10% in the next ten years but started growing and is now larger than ever.

    Other cities have lost population. Many other older cities peaked in 1950 and then declined: Boston, DC, Baltimore, Detroit, St Louis. Some started growing again (Boston for example) while others have continued to shrink.
