  •  The Gillibrand thing isnt simply gender (10+ / 0-)

Kirsten credits Hillary Clinton as her inspiration to get into public service.  She has always said she respsected her and in fact it was Gillibrand's efforts to bring Clinton as a speaker to a female attorneys group in New York that resulted in Clinton's speech and comments on public office to prompt Gillibrand to think of her grandmother, who is a political legend in Albany, and decide to step up.

She worked on Clinton's senatorial campaign in 2000 and came to consider Hillary a close personal friend and professional mentor.  Clinton even advised her to NOT run for the House in 2004 against a strong GOP incumbent when polls showed she would have great difficulty winning and instead wait until 2006.  Gillibrand did exactly that and won with 53% against a 4-term incumbent in a district with more then a 2:1 GOP registration advantage.

And now she holds Clinton's senate seat and considers it a personal honor.

I really don't see her campaigning against Clinton for President.

    •  They are from the same state as well (2+ / 0-)

It's hard to imagine two viable candidates from the same state. Plus Gillibrand is young in president years and can easily afford to sit this one out, rather than taking a risk of  losing badly and damaging herself. The smart move for her it to back Hillary.
