is really polarized. Extremists of all sorts can be found pretty much anywhere, and they're much more vocal and organized than they had been in recent memory, at least in many parts of the world.

I think there are a whole heap of reasons for that, honestly, starting from the changes in geopolitics with the end of the USSR, moving through the Iraq war etc, and involving the evolution of the internet as both a news source and a means for communication.

The internet in particular is a mixed bag, to be clear. On the one hand, people from all over the world can communicate directly, and the goings-on of the world can be connected with in very different ways than was once possible, meaning that there are vastly more available narratives. On the other hand, people can choose to find only those narratives that support their preconceptions, and so rather than dealing with very different opinions, we wind up dealing with very different basic realities. Opinions only harden when they're exposed to nothing that questions their assumptions.

On top of the rest, global capitalism as practiced has created a massive underclass around the world, with skyrocketing levels of inequality. Desperation breeds extremism. Those who find themselves newly struggling often tend to pine for some "better" past, search for a source of blame, and look for some source of pride in something. A flag, often, or an ethnicity, a heritage, an exclusive right.

Humanity has a lot to learn.

My personal opinion is that we're living through the death throes of global capitalism, at least as we have practiced it thus far.
