The electric chair was introduced after Edison demonstrated how dangerous his rival's AC system was by killing an elephant at Coney Island. She had killed a couple of people including her trainer who thought it was a good idea to feed her lit cigarettes.

After objections from many, including those carrying it out, at the visible and other effects - the idea of a separating screen was to avoid the smell of cooked flesh and shit - the gas chamber was introduced as "more humane". That failed because those being executed did not obey the instructions to please breathe in the fumes immediately by taking a deep breath. (Death is by suffocation). They also got a rather bad press in the early 1940s as Zyklon B has the same effect.

The lethal injection was yet another supposedly more humane and "scientific" which accounts for the medical paraphenalia used. The original cocktail's first drug simply paralyzed so the death throws and agony caused by the following two were not visible to the onlookers. One problem is that often the prisoner's veins are inaccessible without "cutting down" - basically dissecting the arm to expose a suitable blood vessel. Since ethics rules forbid doctors or nurses from doing this, it is left to half trained "technicians" to do the job.

"Come to Sochi, visit the gay clubs and play with the bears" - NOT a Russian advertising slogan.

I'm more educated on the death penalty than most, and I think it should be abolished.
