    ... sounds more like they want to identify students who they predict will have those interests.

      Many of the schools they donate to provide course content and curriculum focused on that ideology. It's not just "predicting" a student might lean that way, but assuring that students are exposed solely or principally to their preferred "school of thought". In some cases it was a requirement of the funding. I suppose in others it may have been that the funding followed an existing leaning in the faculty or curriculum.
