  •  I have heard the argument made that if (4+ / 0-)

    capital punishment is really to function as a deterrent to crime, it should be carried out publicly (or, in the 21st century equivalent, broadcast live).

    I presume the reason we DON'T do this is because of our squeamishness--we apparently don't mind shedding blood, as long as we don't actually have to look at it. Which is why we don't see war dead on the TV like we did during Vietnam.

    In the end, reality always wins.
