  •  The CIA has a checkered past. (0+ / 0-)

The truth is that we in the public don't know most of what they've done since WWII. But that includes both bad and good things. I still think that given how much evil there is in this world that the US is usually on the side of good. So while our intelligence agencies and our military have done some bad things I'm not one to paint them with the broad brush of disapproval. We did in the end outlast the Soviet empire, and that empire was decidedly on the side of evil for those of us who respect human rights.

...in Central America who met their deaths due to the CIA's "checkered" past might tend to disagree with you. Jeane Kirkpatrick, one of the pioneer neocons, argued that when the KGB did its work it was more evil than the CIA. When the Soviets backed dictators, it was not equivalent to the CIA doing the same. Nobody I know argues that the KGB acts on its own, a rogue. Why pretend that the CIA has?

I can report to you that most Central Americans who think about such things understand that they were pawns in the global Cold War. And in that struggle, few think that the Soviets were the good guys.

...including Nicaragua, Guatemala and Honduras during the slaughter of the '80s and a degree in International Relations emphasizing Latin America, I can report that the imperialism in the region of the United States, which predates the founding of the Soviet Union, is far more of any issue among progressives in those nations than the Soviets ever were.
