  •  True, although NATO's expelling Turkey (12+ / 0-)

versus Turkey leaving NATO is kind of a distinction without a difference.  Either is possible; there's no way Europe -- let alone the USA -- will defend Turkey against Israel.

Dogs from the street can have all the desirable qualities that one could want from pet dogs. Most adopted stray dogs are usually humble and exceptionally faithful to their owners as if they are grateful for this kindness. -- H.M. Bhumibol Adulyadej

    •  On June 8, 1967 the Israelis attempted to sink (19+ / 0-)

the USS Liberty and kill all 294 sailors on board. They succeeded in the killing of 34 American sailors and wounding another 174. The ship survived thousands of bullets, Napalm bombing, rockets, and a torpedo hit. It limped into a port in Egypt, but was never again able to assume it's mission.

According to former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Thomas Moorer,

“Those men were then betrayed and left to die by our own government.”
The survivors are still awaiting justice. They also still maintain a web site.

In 2002, retired Navy Capt. Ward Boston, who in 2002 broke 35 years of silence, said that the US Navy Board of Inquiry long-cited to clear Israel of wrongdoing in attacking a US Navy ship during the Six Day War was a sham.

There never has  been a Congressional Investigation on this criminal attack in International waters. So it's unlikely that any attack by Israel on a Turkish ship would draw any fire from our compromised politicians in Washington.

War is costly. Peace is priceless!

      •  The Liberty incident was very different (9+ / 0-)

There's no way Israel can claim that this was an accident given the publicity. Israel was being attacked by a bunch of different countries and mistakes happen. This is one of the reasons to oppose war.

Friendly fire is a reality. Israel has already lost two soldiers to friendly fire in the current conflict, from the information I can find.

but that was in the first couple of weeks.
Also, there is no indication of if soldiers killed under the Hannibal Directive would be considered killed by friendly or hostile fire
