I think the police routinely use excessive force. I honestly believe that excessive force was the cause of Eric Garner's death. But this rush to judgement on "choke holds" is going to end up refuting your own arguments, detract from the real problem, and give your adversaries the advantage.

No doubt Garner was in respiratory distress. No doubt Rosan Miller believes she was placed in a chokehold. But the fact that neither of those will be proven by the facts defeats your valid claims of police brutality when people try to claim things that just ain't  so.

As evidenced by common practices in kids wrestling. When restrained by the head and neck it is very common for humans (especially six year-olds) to scream they can't breath. But the simple fact that they can scream is proof positive that they can in fact breath.

So we need to not be gullible fools here and actually look a that the real causes and real brutality before we make easy fools of ourselves.

When my allergies are bad, I cannot walk across the room to get my inhaler, but I can say to my family 'I can't breathe.'

I am barely breathing at that point but I know if it gets worse I will not be able to breathe.

So, yes, I can understand saying you can't breathe while you are being choked.

      •  but even by your own admission (0+ / 0-)

        you can in fact breath.

And all I'm really trying to point out here is in both cases I cited the person is not really placed in  a 'choke hold." So by  all means let's fight police brutality and over reactions. But let's not be stupid about it.

as someone is choking you without letting up, you may be able to get out some panicked cries for help/mercy, but each limited intake of air (due to being choked + asthma, etc.) which follows those cries will be increasingly further away fully catching your breath.

Gradually, your attempts to breathe in enough air to compensate for the panicked cries (and rapid pulse, etc.) are defeated by the choke hold, and you lose consciousness (or worse).

      This is not rocket science.

"So, please stay where you are. Don't move and don't panic. Don't take off your shoes! Jobs is on the way."

      •  Not its not rocket science. Its physics (0+ / 0-)

For all the other mitigating factors you cite which a readily agree with neither of the people in these instances were being physically "choked." And to try and claim they were is just stupid in the face of reality.

And once again let me stress. I'm not saying the  police actions did not cause the person's death. But it was not due to a "choke hold."

claims. You are demonstrating her and my points on how the obvious can be twisted and distorted. Again, even when plain, in a picture, or video, folks find a way to deny.

      The Man died.

That is not a rush to judgement, that is proof that he could not breathe!

I think that saying that respiratory distress will not be proven by facts is denying obvious proof.

      The Man died.

      •  Yes The Man Died (0+ / 0-)

But not from the alleged choke-hold. There could be a half dozen reasons he died and all of those reasons could be the direct result of unnecessary force on the part of the police.

But the physiological fact remains that while the victim was screaming he could not breath he was not being choked.
