...of that crappy, poor-paying jobs stuff.

I'm glad the economy is producing a bit better. It would just be nice if these economic reports said something great for the working people of this nation.

Adequate health care should be a LEGAL RIGHT in the U.S without begging or bankruptcy. Until it is, we should not dare call our society civilized.

seems to be some upward pressure on wages is several low wage fields.  More pressure on raising the minimum wage should help with that trend.

      •  Ya think? ;) Of course, I agree with you... (0+ / 0-)

...and so does Bill fucking O'Reilly, for God's sake! Even he thinks that the minimum wage should be $10/hr, yet our side somehow lets the issue float.

Lots of jobs are going to be poor paying simply because they don't require special skills or experience and there are lots of people willing to do them. The best we can do is hope for higher wages and better treatment, but cleaning toilets and flipping burgers are never going to be great jobs with high pay and great chances for upward mobility.

      •  Until those jobs pay better... (0+ / 0-)

...all the economic "growth" in the world won't mean shit for the average American worker...sorry, but it won't.

        •  working vs. not working (0+ / 0-)

means Something. Either that or the people who we constantly see, hear or read about saying things like "I'll wash dished, make beds, clean toilets...ANYTHING...just give me a chance to WORK" are lying.

          •  You're misreading what I am saying... (0+ / 0-)

I'm not saying people don't work those jobs. I'm saying people shouldn't point to indicators like GDP and U3 and act as though the economy is some sort of dynamo.

This tends to be the problem with a Democratic blog. So many are so eager to make the economy APPEAR better for Obama's sake (and for the sake of 2014) that they overlook the reality behind the macro statistic.

We need to work to improve the quality of life for the folks working 1 or more of these low-paying jobs. When we do that (and we haven't), we will earn their votes. Until then, tossing 6.1% unemployment and 4% GDP doesn't amount to a sack of cat crap.

Adequate health care should be a LEGAL RIGHT in the U.S without begging or bankruptcy. Until it is, we should not dare call our society civilized.
