    I know I do from a spell with pneumonia and the unrelenting horrendous coughing.  Your doctor is correct that as long as you're not having a problem, correction is unnecessary.

    Umbilical hernias (as they are called) are rarely problematic.

    Inguinal hernias that develop in men are different.  They DO cause problems in many patients, although not most.

    Hernias are actually portions of the intestines that protrude through a weakness in the abdominal wall.  In men, that weakness is produced when their testicles (that grow in the same place as womens ovaries) descend to the scrotum while they're still in the womb.  Over the years, the weakness can increase due to a variety of factors like heavy lifting or coughing.

    So relax about your hernia.  It will likely give you no problems.
