  •  ... and my parents were feminist, too (8+ / 0-)

Abortion was never discussed with my parents until.... in my mid thirties, in the early 80s, when my elderly parents were visiting from out of town (a small town), we all awoke one early Sunday morning to an angry, loud crowd of "pro-life" protesters picketing a close by neighbor doctor's home, with bull horns and offensive signs. My parents then told me, for the first time, that my mother had accompanied my aunt, via long bus drive, for an illegal abortion in the 40's. Aunt survived excessive bleeding on bus ride back home as they made it to a hospital in time but it was an understandably traumatic experience for all involved..... And, that morning, I informed my parent about our (myself, husband, daughter, and friends) involvement in supporting safe, legal abortion care for women. They were very supportive and approving.
I never told my parents about my abortion in the 70's.
