    in either case, resorting to force vitiates free will. If "waging peace" relies on coercion, then the cause is already lost because coercion negates liberty. Coerced obedience is not a virtue. Indeed, coercion is what turns all virtue into vice -- makes no difference whether there's force or just the threat.

    Which leads to the conclusion that the culture of obedience, even if manifest as peace and quite, is basically immoral. That multiple forces are contesting to ensure compliance does not make a difference either. The only out is to call a halt.

      If "waging peace" relies on coercion ...

      How about "waging peace" relying on talking to your "enemies" -- not bombing them;

      Treating them with the modicum of dignity as "fellow human beings"?  (which they are.)

      Are you saying you'd prefer war to peace? Are you saying that peace is bad because it's somehow contrived, dictatorial? I'm sorry, I'm just not following where you're going with this or what it is you mean.

      •  We cannot "wage" peace. For that matter, (1+ / 0-)

        peace may well be a euphemism for submission and subservience. Peace means the absence of disturbance, but nature is in a state of disturbance, constantly changing. To be "at peace" is to be dead.
        Perhaps peace is not a state to be sought.

          To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.

        •  So you're objecting to the use of the word "wage" (0+ / 0-)

          and giving it a meaning that the diarist clearly never intended and now you're against peace... or at least your interpretation of the word "peace". Most people do not use the word "peace" as a euphemism for submission and subservience as you must surely be aware. By choosing to attach a very different meaning than the one generally meant to the word, you have enclosed yourself in a language bubble. Hard to communicate honestly with people when you choose to go that route.

          •  Certainly the pacifiers who set up the (0+ / 0-)

            pacification program under the auspices of the DoD knew what they were about. Civilian compliance programs also aim to get people to do what they are told -- i.e. to submit to another's direction.
            Elitists are not just about preening. They require that others submit to their authority, regardless of whether they actually know what they are talking about.

            It is true that many people use words without considering their meaning and assume that their interlocutors are in agreement. One of my interests is in suggesting that some such assumptions are not well founded.

              "pacification" is a very different word and it describes exactly what you mean. Now I understand your concern. Thank you for being so patient and persistent in answering me. It was worth it from my end. (◕‿◕)
