    looks of it those numbers [14% of congress] give Brazil's evangelicals clout way beyond their percentage of the country's population.

    It is true that the word evangélico includes mainstream protestant in Portuguese, unlike English.  But it's also true that non-evangelical (in the US sense) protestants are a small minority in Brazil.  Pretty much all the growth has been in the charismatic and fundamentalist churches and sects.
